Coca-Cola
The Coca-Cola Company reported better-than-expected Q2 results, driven by higher pricing and resilient demand for its sodas, leading to an increase in its annual revenue and profit forecasts. The company now expects full-year organic revenue growth of 8-9 percent (up from 7-8 percent) and a 5-6 percent rise in core earnings per share (up from 4-5 percent). The company's average selling prices rose 10 percent in Q2 and, despite North American volumes declining by 1 percent, overall unit case volumes remained flat.
According to leaked information, Coca-Cola’s Fanta is expected to launch a Halloween-themed mystery flavor this autumn as part of its ‘What the Fanta’ campaign. The campaign started in 2022 and features the release of limited-edition mystery-flavored soft beverages. The new mystery flavor will be offered in bottle and ICEE variants, and is believed to have a black color, which is not connected to its taste. Coca-Cola has not confirmed its release.
Danone
In Q2, Danone increased prices by 8.7 percent, which was lower than the 10.3 percent increase in Q1, and net sales grew 6.4 percent like-for-like. Overall volumes were down 2.3 percent decrease in overall volumes, including a 3.3 percent decline in its essential diary and plant-based products business. In its largest market, Europe, sales increased by 6.5 percent to €2.4 billion. Despite this, Danone’s recurring operating profit margin in Europe declined by 290 basis points in the first half of the year, reaching 10.6 percent in LFL terms.
Keurig Dr Pepper
Keurig Dr Pepper and La Colombe, a US-based premium coffee brand, announced a strategic partnership that includes a long-term sales and distribution arrangement for La Colombe’s ready-to-drink coffee, set to begin in late 2023, and a licensing, manufacturing, and distribution agreement for La Colombe’s K-Cup coffee pods in the US and Canada, planned for 2024. KDP will also invest $300 million in La Colombe, acquiring a 33 percent stake in the brand, pending regulatory approval. The partnership aims to expand KDP’s presence in the RTD premium coffee segment and broaden La Colombe’s consumer reach.
Other Companies
Jones Soda, a Canadian soda brand, launched its first crossover flavor, Hatch Chile & Lime, in collaboration with its cannabis soda brand extension, Mary Jones. The beverage is available from both brands, with the cannabis-infused Mary Jones version offering 10mg of THC per 12fl oz bottle. The beverages can be ordered from the Jones Soda and Mary Jones websites, with the Mary Jones variant also available at California dispensaries.
Boston Beer Company’s TeaPot, a Canadian-based cannabis-infused iced tea brand, launched the first flavor in its new Good Evening Iced Tea line: Blueberry Chamomile & Black Sugar Rose. The iced tea is non-caffeinated and infused with Black Sugar Rose, an Indica-dominant cannabis strain, intended to provide a relaxing and calming effect. Like other TeaPot products, the beverage does not have a cannabis taste or aroma, and it contains 5mg of THC per 355ml can. It is available at select dispensaries across Canada.
Kona Gold Beverage, a US-based better-for-you beverage company, announced a distribution partnership with Cottonwood Distribution, a C-store distributor based in Utah. Cottonwood will distribute Kona Gold’s 16oz Ooh La Lemin Lemonades to 72 Holiday Oil C-stores in Utah, marking Kona Gold’s entry into the state. Ooh La Lemin Lemonades are free from added sugar and offer 15 calories per 16oz can. Kona Gold also plans to announce further distribution expansion in California and other western regions soon.
US-based GoodPop, a frozen treat brand, entered the beverage category with the introduction of its Mini Cans range. The beverages are crafted using fruit juice and sparkling water, with each 7.5oz can containing 6g of sugar or less and no added sugar, sweeteners or flavors. The Mini Cans come in three varieties: Fruit Punch, Orange and Lemon Lime. The beverages are available at select Sprouts, Costco and Whole Food stores across the US, as well as online through GoodPop’s website and Thrive Market, priced at $7.99 for a 6-can single flavor pack or $14.88 for an 18-can variety pack.
Beliv, a Latin American better-for-you beverage company, acquired a 78 percent stake in High Brew, a US-based ready-to-drink cold brew coffee brand. High Brew uses a cold extraction process to make its beverages, which it claims results in beverages that naturally contain more antioxidants and are less acidic than traditional hot brewed coffee. The acquisition forms part of Beliv’s global expansion strategy and allows the company to strengthen its presence in the US.
Zevia, a US-based brand specializing in natural zero-sugar beverages, is exploring getting a new distribution partner to expand its business beyond selling multi-packs in grocery stores to selling single-serve cold beverages in C-stores. According to Axios, Zevia’s beverages are currently available in 90 percent of grocery stores nationwide.
