Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola is accelerating reusable packaging pilots with North American food service and on-premises customers. The company is expanding its partnership with rCup, a provider of end-to-end reusable cup solutions in large-scale sports and entertainment venues, by improving rCup’s infrastructure and capacity in key cities. Additionally, Coca-Cola is piloting a program for returnable glass bottles in El Paso, Texas, and exploring collaborations with Validfill for reusable cups with microchip and QR-enabled technology for its Freestyle machines, as well as a partnership with A&W Canada for an exchangeable cup program.
Coca-Cola Bottling Company High Country opened a new 14-acre Distribution and Manufacturing Center in Billings, MT, costing approximately $25 million and adding over 50 local jobs. The project received financial support from The Big Sky Economic Development Opportunity Fund with $250,000, the City of Billings with $250,000 and a tax abatement, and Yellowstone County provided a tax abatement for water and sewer line construction. The company already had a warehouse in Billings with 60 employees, functioning solely as a distribution point. The new facility is scheduled to open by January 2024.
Danone
Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree to seize control of the Russian subsidiaries of Danone and Carlsberg, which is viewed as a response to Western seizures of Russian assets. Carlsberg is evaluating the legal and operational implications of this decision, as it had agreed in June 2023 to sell the subsidiary pending regulatory approval. Danone is also investigating this issue, having already begun transferring control of its Russian business to a Russian entity in October 2022.
Nestle
Nestlé will roll out its patented sugar reduction technology globally after successful piloting in Southeast Asia. The technology reduces intrinsic sugar in ingredients like milk and fruit juices by up to 30 percent, reportedly without affecting taste or texture, and does not require added sweeteners or bulking agents. The technology also increases prebiotic fibers in milk-based products, which is claimed to promote a healthy microbiome in adults. Nestlé has already introduced it in factory lines for cocoa and malt-based powdered beverages across countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with plans to expand its use to other product categories.
Buxton joined the Scan|Recycle|Reward digital deposit return scheme (DDRS) trial in Brecon, South Wales. The trial incentivizes individuals with 10p rewards for recycling by scanning uniquely labeled beverage bottles with their phones and then recycling the packaging as normal at home or at designated return points around the town. Participants can cash in their rewards or donate them to select local charities. It is claimed to be the first-of-its-kind trial for a whole town and is being led by the DDRS Alliance, Welsh Government, WRAP Cymru, Powys County Council and local retailers. It will run from July 13 to October 4, 2023.

AG Barr’s Boost, a UK-based energy and sports beverage brand, filed an intellectual property claim against Robinsons, a UK-based fruit concentrate brand owned by Britvic. The claim alleges that the ‘Boost’ variant of Robinsons’ recently launched functional fruit concentrate range infringes on AG Barr’s Boost beverage trademark. AG Barr’s Boost asserts that it owns the trademark for the word 'boost' in non-alcoholic beverage categories, including fruit concentrates and other dilutable beverages.
According to confidential sources, Alani Nu, a US-based wellness energy beverage and snack brand founded by trainer and social media influencer Katy Hearn, is considering a full or partial sale of the brand with a valuation exceeding $3 billion. Alani Nu has generated around $100 million in annual EBITDA since launching in 2018. JPMorgan Chase & Co is reportedly assisting the brand in exploring its options.
C4 Energy, a US-based energy beverage brand, partnered with REORG, a charity supporting veterans, and military and emergency responders, to launch a limited-edition product range called Pineapple Head. The range includes a C4 Performance Energy Pineapple Head energy beverage, priced at £1.59 per 500ml can, as well as C4 Original Pre-Workout in 30-serving sizes for £26.99 and 60-serving sizes for £36.99. The range’s packaging will feature REORG's mission statement and logo, with a portion of proceeds donated to the charity. The products will be available from August 1, 2023, at various UK retailers, including WHSmith, Holland & Barrett, Amazon, convenience stores, Pure Gym and The Gym Group.
