According to a recent Mintel report, Gen Z consumers are 'significantly more likely' to drink ready-to-drink coffee than traditional hot brewed coffee. Gen Z’s preference for cold coffee indicates key growth opportunities for RTD coffee brands and a need for roasted coffee brands to connect with Gen Z consumers. New flavors present a major growth opportunity within the fast-growing RTD coffee segment. Consumers are particularly interested in indulgently flavored RTD coffees, with trending flavors such as chocolate peanut butter, salted maple, and cookies and cream. Research from FMCG Gurus shows that 74 percent of global consumers say they like to go beyond classic indulgence with new and unusual flavors in coffee and tea products. As a result, companies are incorporating regional ingredients, citrus infusions, and botanicals and spices to differentiate their products. Despite the popularity of flavored RTD coffees, some customers seek more authentic coffee experiences. Increasingly educated consumers experiment with different roast levels and geographical origins to appreciate flavor nuances. Functionality and fortification are also major growth opportunities in RTD coffees. Mintel found that 35 percent of consumers are interested in RTD coffees that offer functional benefits in addition to energy and brands are exploring RTD coffee infused with protein, collagen, electrolytes or adaptogens. Companies are also making coffee-inspired beverages without coffee beans. San Francisco’s Minus Coffee ferments ingredients such as chicory root, dates and lentils to replicate the taste and aroma of cold brew coffee.
