Wellness product provider, Cheribundi, launched two tart cherry-based products: Immunity and Sleep Concentrates. Cheribundi says tart cherries are the most antioxidant-rich superfruit in the world and CEO, Marcel Bens, said “According to leading exercise physiologists, there is no product in the world proven to help athletes recover better than tart cherry juice.” Immunity Concentrate contains ginger and vitamin C while Sleep Concentrate has melatonin and magnesium. Kofola Group made three brands available in glass 1-liter bottles that can be returned. The brands are Rajec, Vinea and, most significantly, Kofola which was invented in the 1950s as a Czechoslovak alternative to Western colas and is still popular today. Kofola has a distinctive herbal taste, contains 30% less sugar than Pepsi or Coke but about 50% more caffeine. Kofola Group CEO said the company was keen to become more sustainable and is working through the Cirkulka project. Customers can purchase the products at selected Tesco locations and at the online store Rohlík.cz. The bottles require an eight-crown deposit that is refunded on return.
The Chinese dairy conglomerate Yili Group announced it would collaborate with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) to conduct research in space on dairy products. A core part of the partnership will be the establishment of the Space Lab for Future Dairy. A spokesperson expressed hope that the work will “will bring about lighter, safer and more environmentally friendly food packaging materials, as well as nutrition and health products tailored for special segments of the population, with the aim of enabling consumers to enjoy advanced technologies and products in their daily lives.”
Kerry Taste & Nutrition’s BC30 (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086) probiotic has long been added to foods and drinks to give them functional benefits, however, it has only been available in powder form until now. Kerry’s new liquid BC30 probiotic will help create innovation opportunities for plant-based milks and liquid milk. A spokesperson for the company said 25 studies back ingredient claims for improving digestive health, supporting immune health, and boosting protein absorption. Good Food Institute estimates the plant-based milk category is growing at a rate of 20% year-on-year, and was valued at $2.5 billion, with almond milk commanding the largest share, followed by oat milk.
In the UK, cranberry juice producer Ocean Spray relaunched its sparkling pink cranberry drink in a smaller 250ml can and said it will donate to a cancer charity 5p (~8 cents) from each pack sold. It carries a recommended retail price of £1.19 and comes with the campaign message of “Bubbles with Benefits”. Alongside this initiative, Ocean Spray announced a partnership with The Pink Ribbon Foundation, an organisation that helps people affected by breast cancer as well as advancing early detection and treatment. A spokesperson said: “Sparkling pink has been a real success in the independent sector since its launch last summer and by relaunching the can in a new, sleeker format we are expecting this success to grow significantly in 2022.”
To help manage its rapid growth, Poppi, has appointed a new CEO, Chris Hall, previously from Talking Rain Beverage and most recently CEO of the Sparkling Ice brand. In just two years, Poppi's prebiotic sodas moved from farmers’ markets to a Shark Tank investment and is now available nationwide at over 11,000 retailers including Target, Safeway, Kroger, Publix, Whole Foods and Sprouts. It also has a strong online presence with over 1 billion views on TikTok. Investors in Poppi include CAVU Venture Partners along with celebrities such as Olivia Munn, The Chainsmokers and Ellie Goulding. Poppi claims to be a leader in the functional soda category, which Research and estimates will reach $173.23 billion in 2025.
Quench is continuing its push into point-of-use (POU) drinking water systems with the purchase of Crescent Hills Water Company. Texas-based Crescent Hills Water Company was established in 1999 and Quench says the acquisition adds “significant density” in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. This is Quench’s fourth acquisition in 2022, including its acquisition of Blue Caffe, another POU water systems and coffee services company.
Bubluv Inc. launched Bubble Tea, which it claims is the first ready-to-drink boba alternative containing no added sugar. Building on the insight that boba tea contains a lot of sugar, the New York startup reformulated its tapioca pearls so they are made with a blend of tapioca starch and the root vegetable konjac. The company claims konjac provides a texture between jelly and a regular tapioca pearl. Sweetness comes from monk fruit. Bubble Tea is both keto-friendly and gluten-free and contains antioxidants, such as vitamin C. It is available at bubluv.com for $34.99 for a 6-pack of 9.5-oz bottles and is available in three flavors, matcha soy latte, oolong guava and black milk tea.
