Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Opens Fifth Factory In Ethiopia

Coca-Cola’s new $100 million Coca-Cola bottling plant officially opened in Sebeta Town of Ethiopia on Tuesday, the 31st of May. The factory is Coca-Cola Beverages Africa’s (CCBA) fifth in Ethiopia, with a sixth plant to be built at Hawassa. The new plant will bring the production capacity of the company to more than 100 million cases a year and allows it to produce new products locally. It will also integrate the production of inputs, unlock export opportunities and ease foreign exchange constraints. The new plant is a result of the $300 million investment announced in 2019 to expand CCBA’s operations in Ethiopia over five years. Coca-Cola has had strong business ties with Ethiopia since 1959, when the first Coca-Cola bottle was manufactured in Addis Ababa. In addition to creating new job opportunities, CCBA also contributes to the Ethiopian community through building schools, creating polyethylene phthalate collection centers, and supporting women and youth economic inclusion projects.

Minute Maid Launches Summer Promotion For Aquas Frescas

Coca-Cola’s Minute Maid has launched a summer promotion for its Aguas Frescas line that debuted in March. The brand is hosting a giveaway leading up to “the first unofficial Friday of summer” (the Friday after Memorial Day) with winners getting a personal bartender and giant waterslide delivered to their homes. People in particularly hot cities such as Atlanta, Austin, and Los Angeles can also win an on-demand delivery of Aguas Frescas cans, while consumers elsewhere in the U.S. can receive the beverage via mail. The line’s “Refreshing AF” tagline play on Aguas Frescas’ initials while targeting Gen Z consumers who are familiar with the shorthand phrase. The overall promotion attempts to associate the non-carbonated juice beverage with cool, refreshing sensations as the U.S. gets warmer.

BODYARMOR Hires New CEO

Coca-Cola fully acquired sports drink brand BODYARMOR in November 2021 and has hired Federico Muyshondt as its new CEO. BODYARMOR still operates independently from Coca-Cola but draws upon the patent’s resources and buying power, which has resulted in significant growth. Muyshondt hopes to further grow BODYARMOR through expanding domestic distribution in large stores, e-commerce, club, and foodservice and strategically building the brand. Though BODYARMOR’s core sports drink accounts for around 70% of revenues, Muyshondt believes its three most recent brand extensions hold the biggest potential for incremental growth. BODYARMOR Lyte has no added sugar and allows BODYARMOR to expand from a sports-focused brand to a more encompassing lifestyle brand. Muyshondt claims BODYARMOR Edge, with 100mg of caffeine per serving, has potential to grow in the convenience channel. BODYARMOR Sportwater, with pH 9+, is also uniquely positioned as premium water for athletes and allows the brand to blur the line between sports drinks and broader functional beverages.
